Moss Hart Reads from the Man Who Came to Dinner and Lady in the Dark (#7146)
Published in Audio Cassette by Spoken Arts (April, 1987)
Average review score:

A Dinner Worth Savoring
Of all the magnificent works penned by the legendary writing team of Kauffman and Hart, "The Man Who Came To Dinner" stands alone as a true masterpiece of its genre. Arguably the greatest American drawing room comedy of all time, the show opened on Broadway in 1939 starring Monty Wooly as Sheridan Whiteside (a role he would later repeat on screen), and was an immediate success. Though over sixty years old, the work has stood the test of time as its multilayered plot, and bizare characters remain as funny today as they were when first performed. Though no experience can compare to viewing the play on stage, listening to Moss Hart read the script aloud is definitely a worthy and often fascinating substitute. To those who love comedy, and the grand theatre of a bygone era, I recommend this tape without reservation!

Murder in the Air
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Ballantine Books (December, 1997)
Author: Ellen Hart
Average review score:

Enjoyable and thought-provoking
In 1958, Justin Bloom supposedly killed his girl friend and fled the area. This led to a public scandal and outrage towards the prominent family. Most people believed what they read in the papers since the eye witness to the shooting was a well respected police officer. Forty years have passed and Justin has never been found. Most people believe that he is dead. His mother Heda has just bought a Minnesota radio station where Bram Baldric is a talk show host. Brian is married to Sophie Greenway, owner of the plush Maxfield Plaza Hotel.

Heda is reviving the old radio serial, Dallas Lane, Private Eye. The show airs weekly, but in actuality is a thinly disguised version of the Bloom case. All the participants from four decades ago are living in the area and many star in the show. It is obvious that the more information that is presented, the more agitated the players become. Bram and Sophie begin to realize that Heda is trying to prove that her son is innocent by providing his account of what happened all those years ago. This is one show that is making someone very edgy, enough so that someone else connected to the case is murdered.

Ellen Hart is a great mystery writer who creates innovative stories. In this case, every few chapters, a letter is sent from Justin to his mother that gradually explains how the chief suspect sees that fatal day. Readers receive a brilliantly developed historical perspective with a contemporary resolution. There are plenty of red herrings, double identities, and sleight of the hand incidents to keep readers fully absorbed in MURDER IN THE AIR, a who-done-it that should earn Ms. Hart another award.

Old Bullion Benton, Senator from the New West: Thomas Hart Benton, 1782-1858.
Published in Textbook Binding by Russell&Russell Pub (June, 1970)
Author: William Nisbet, Chambers
Average review score:

Outstanding political history of the early to mid-19th C.
This biography of Thomas Hart Benton is an outstanding look at not only the man, but the politics of an era. While many are familiar with the names and actions of Clay, Webster, and Calhoun, few are so familiar with the fourth member of this "quadumvirate." Benton was every bit as eloquent, influential, and powerful as his contemporaries, but his contributions seem to have been overshadowed in popular conception by his fellow Democrats, Andrew Jackson and Stephen Douglass. For the first time we see a man driven to represent his adopted state (Missouri), his penchant for engaging in duels (he once shot Andrew Jackson who carried the bullet for twenty years), and his sincere desire to aid the working man in the expansion of the new West. Benton's thirty-plus year career spans from the age of the founding fathers to the beginnings of the sectional crisis of the Civil War. This work is a must read for those interested in the politics of the Jacksonian era which led to the Civil War.

The history of Oliver/Hart-Parr from beginning to end!
If you want to find out more about the beginning of the Oliver & Hart Parr tractors, I recommend this book. It gives detailed information on all the tractors released and some that weren't released. This is a must have for Oliver/Hart-Parr tractor collectors. I don't have much else to say but that this book is worth the money!

Organizational Values in America
Published in Paperback by Transaction Pub (October, 1989)
Authors: William G. Scott and David K. Hart
Average review score:

Can we change?
This book really made me think. I thought I never would agree with the authors' conclusions, but after looking at those people close to me (father, father-in-law, uncles, friends, etc.) who are no better off now than when they started working in Organizational America 30 years ago, I have to agree.

Can we change before things get worse? Maybe with Hart's & Scott's recommendations and insights (really nothing more than reiterations of what most of us already know and believe) we can!

Paper Palaces: The Rise of the Renaissance Architectural Treatise
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (October, 1998)
Authors: Vaughan Hart and Peter Hicks
Average review score:

an enormously important collection of essays
This collection is a must for all students of the Renaissance, covering as it does a vital set of texts whose influence on the course of western architecture was profound. This book not only explains the treatise tradition, but throws new light on many of the principles which shaped Renaissance architecture, from the work of Alberti through to Scamozzi. The editors, who provided the wonderful translation of Sebastiano Serlio (also published by Yale), have done a great job!

The Parent's Guide to Baby & Child Medical Care

The Parent's Guide to Baby and Medical Care
My wife and I bought a copy of Dr. Hart's handy guide in the early 1980s, and found it very useful in the raising of our four kids over the years. Our copy is always available on a handy bookshelf, and is well thumbed through. I have found the format to be logical, and well thought out. The spiral binding made it easy to use hands free. We like it so much that we bought additional copies as gifts, to give to other parents.

Parlor Cats: A Victorian Celebration

Authors: Cynthia Hart, John Grossman, and Josephine Banks
Average review score:

The PURRfect Book for Cat Lovers!
This has to be the most eye appealing book for anyone who loves cats, especially if the cat lover is also into antiques. The antique "scrap" images are so numerous and varied that everytime you look at this book you find things you missed the time before. The design is very decorative and colorful and is a beautiful coffee table book. I recommend it highly!
